CBD vs THC

CBD vs. THC

THC stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol. CBD stands for Cannabidiol. And in case you were wondering: is CBD psychoactive? The answer is no. THC gets you "high", while CBD doesn't.

THC and CBD are both cannabinoids and are just two of more than 100 different compounds found in the chemical makeup of the cannabis plant.

On paper, at least chemically, CBD and THC look virtually identical. So what makes CBD so different from THC? It all comes down to the molecular structures of the two compounds, which have one tiny difference - the position of just one atom - which causes THC to have a psychoactive effect while CBD doesn't.

It all comes down to the fact that the two compounds react with receptors in the body that are part of what is known as the endocannabinoid system, currently under scientific research and thought to be responsible for the proper functioning of many other systems in the body, such as the nervous system and the digestive one.

There are two types of these receptors, known as 'CB1' and 'CB2'. CB1 receptors are found in the brain, specifically in the parts of the brain that control things like emotion, coordination and memory, while CB2 receptors are distributed throughout the immune and central nervous systems. THC's chemical structure allows it to bind directly to CB1 receptors found in the brain, hence its psychoactive effect. The chemical structure of CBD, on the other hand, does not allow it to interact directly with CB1 receptors, giving the CBD molecule similar health benefits to the THC molecule without the mind-altering effects. Important, you will not become addicted to it.
